Just the research. Nothing added.

Each week, Clever New Stuff gathers new research papers that people working in industry would want to know about. It regularly covers four areas – materials and manufacturing, energy, process and chemicals, and instrumentation – and adds others, such as aerospace or semiconductors, when a strong paper turns up.

Every item states what the researchers claim, then the conditions behind the work and its limits. We report what the authors claim, but we don’t add to it or rate the papers.

We look for lesser-known research: papers in journals that rarely reach the trade press, and from research centers outside the English-speaking world. Every item is based on an open-access paper and links to it, so you can read the original and reach your own conclusions.

How it’s made. An editor decides what CNS covers, how papers are chosen, and what each item must report: the claim, the conditions behind it, and its limits. Software does the legwork. It scans newly published research that is free to read, screens it against those rules, and drafts each item from the full paper. A separate check compares every draft against its paper. An editor reads every issue, and edits it where needed, before it goes out. Items carry the byline CNS Staff.

Who publishes it. Spirit of Inquiry LLC publishes Clever New Stuff. It also publishes Truly Curious, a magazine of interview-based features about researchers.
